Breastfeeding Matters

This "double feature" class shows how the birth experience you have directly impacts your breastfeeding relationship.  In the first half of the class, you will learn how the events that occur during birth directly influence the ease of establishing and maintaining breastfeeding.  When you understand how important birth is, you will be motivated to strive for natural childbirth!  The second part of the class will give you tips on how to get started with breastfeeding, no matter what your birth experience.  There will be plenty of time for your questions about birth and breastfeeding.  Husbands encouraged to attend.

Ask us about the Learn-at-Home option.  Cost: $25

Natural Breastfeeding: what's that?

"Natural Breastfeeding" refers to breastfeeding that, similar to natural childbirth, is free of unnecessary technology.  It means the baby receives all of his nutrition and soothing at his mother's breast until he shows an interest in solid foods, after which he is gradually introduced to other foods.  While in no way condemning mothers or families who have chosen other feeding methods or baby soothers, it is simply a statement of fact that for all the many centuries of human history, many mothers have successfully fed their babies without the need for or use of such items as bottles, breast pumps, or pacifiers.  Advantages of Natural Breastfeeding include:

1.  Optimal Nutrition for Baby
Mama's milk, straight from breast to baby, is the optimal nutrition for the baby and young child.  Breastmilk that is stored or frozen, while still much better than other sources of infant nutrition, can lose some of the "good stuff" babies need: nutrients and immunities to help baby from getting sick, depending on how it's stored or heated.

2.  Easier Breastfeeding
Some babies, especially newborns, find it difficult to "switch" between mother's nipple and artificial nipples.  This can frustrate the baby's efforts to learn to nurse at mother's breast and interrupt the establishment or maintenance of the mother's milk supply.  In addition, the mother needn't prepare or clean any bottles or storage containers.  She doesn't have to learn how to pump milk or care for the pump.  She also doesn't need to spend time retrieving or hunting for missing pacifiers.  She can just relax and nurse and play with her baby!

3.  Ease of bonding with baby
Babies who are fed and soothed exclusively at the mother's breast usually develop a very close attachment with their mothers.

4.  Confidence in the child
Natural breastfeeding requires mother and baby to be near each other the vast majority of the time.  As he grows, this helps the baby to feel secure and security brings confidence.  Such babies often protest quite strongly when separated from their mothers, which should be taken as a sign of the importance of mother to the baby, not as a sign of clinginess.

5.  Sense of accomplishment for the mother
It is with great pride that the mother gazes upon the child she helped to grow in her womb and at her breast with her own milk.  She can feel great pride that she is able to bring comfort to her child.

6.  Pride in his wife
The father of the baby can be amazed and proud of his wife's accomplishments in carrying, bearing, nursing, and comforting their child so beautifully.

7.  Financial savings & easy on the environment
While certainly not sufficient reasons alone to choose Natural Breastfeeding, it is very cheap and good for the environment.  Besides purchasing some nursing bras, and perhaps nursing pads if the mother experiences leaking of the breasts, there are no expenses.  Mama's milk doesn't need to be manufactured, packaged, or shipped.  No one has to advertise it or send out mailings.

8.  Preferred by choosy babies worldwide
To your baby, there's nothing else like you and your milk!
