Natural Parenting 101

Are you up for the adventure of a lifetime?  Natural Parenting is Parenting with Joy, plain and simple.  Sure, it has its downside (like when you get a foot in the eye at 3 am) but overall, having done it three times, I'd do it a thousand more, if I could.  (Well, okay, maybe three or four or...)  Read on for more...

Natural Parenting 101

Natural Parenting will be different for every family, but most families who follow this philosophy of parenting share similar practices:

...bonding at birth

...breastfeeding, with gradual weaning

...baby"wearing"
(carrying baby a lot, in backpacks or slings or other carriers)

...sharing sleep with baby

...responsiveness to baby

The Natural Parenting 101 course will give a detailed look at why and how to practically accomplish all of the above, so that you can discuss as a couple how this might work in your unique family.  The course is divided into three sessions that you can schedule at your convenience.

Session One includes an introduction to Natural Parenting, a discussion of the importance of bonding at birth and breastfeeding, with gradual weaning.

What goes in must come out!  Before our eldest was born, Chris had never changed even one diaper!  Now, he's definitely a pro.  Dealing with the vast amounts of waste products your baby accumulates is a huge part of the first year of your baby's life, and beyond...  We have used cloth diapers with all three of our daughters and have developed a system with the bare minimum of motherly and fatherly effort.  We will talk about buying, using and caring for cloth diapers, or even Infant Potty Training, for the brave.

Session Two zeroes in on baby care: wearing your baby, the importance of touch, and sharing sleep with baby.  A fun way to bond with your child that helps her growth and development is Infant Massage.  This class includes a demonstration of some basic techniques.

Session Three focuses on communication and building a strong family.  A very important part of Natural Parenting is developing a closeness with your baby.  This is obviously aided by communication.  Early in a baby's life, she communicates with her various cries.  Later, she can learn signs to communicate, far earlier than she learns words.  Therefore, this class will include a basic set of Infant Signs.

This class ends with a discussion of how Natural Parenting can help you build a strong and joyful family, how to avoid pitfalls of Natural Parenting, and help baby "fit" into the family.  The Facts Only version includes the book, The Baby Book, by Sears and Sears.

The Christian version also includes Christian perspectives on parenting and many of the topics listed above.  It includes the book Christian Parenting and Child Care by Sears and Sears.

The Natural Parenting 101 course can be taken before or after your baby is born.  Each session lasts about an hour and a half, or two if we really get to chatting.  Class fee: $75 (includes the book, The Baby Book or Christian Parenting & Child Care both by Sears and Sears)

This class is available anytime as a Learn at Home class.  Let us know if you prefer the Facts Only or the Christian version when you register.
